Casas de Núñez: Living Room Remodel (Feat. Burrow)

Since fall of 2020, we’ve been working to remodel our 100-year-old property in St. Petersburg, FL, Casas de Núñez. In summer of 2021, we completed the transformation of our living room and we’re thrilled with the way it turned out! In this post, we’re excited to reveal the outcome. Continue scrolling for some crazy before photos, our style mood board, and lots of images of the finished space!

Before

This room in the home needed so much love poured into it to make the space shine. We started by ripping up two layers of flooring - tile and hardwood (which we repurposed to restore other sections of wood flooring in the house) - and ripping out the built-ins around the fireplace. We didn’t want to see the old built-ins go initially, but they were so termite damaged, the cabinets practically crumbled in our hands. Thankfully, Anna’s grandpa is a woodworker and helped us by building new shelves to replace the built-ins, a new mantel for the fireplace, and trim for the windows.

Other projects in the living room consisted of repairing and leveling the sub-floor, painting, laying new tile, replacing the fan, and restoring the fireplace! Anna’s other grandpa is a retired brick mason and generously volunteered to bring it back to working order for us by adding a flue to the chimney, restoring the interior, and building a new brick hearth.

What makes this room extra special to us is the amount of love and care that was put into it.

Mood Board

For the design of this room, we wanted the style to feel modern and clean, yet welcoming and cozy with a subtle Florida bungalow vibe. We brightened up the space with some white walls and made our fireplace pop with bold black paint. We added warmth and comfort to the room with our gorgeous leather sofas from Burrow (which we’re obsessed with to this day) and looked for ways to infuse our creative personalities into the space with pops of color from our rug, plants, and artwork. We wanted the items on our shelves to tell a story about our relationship, personal interests, and travels, and we love how these elements make the space feel very “us”.

Here’s a list of sources for the items that we used in the design of the space:
