3 Clever Locations for Styling Flatlays at Home
I’ve been styling lots of shoots at home in quarantine over the last 6 months, and have needed to get creative with my locations in the process.
Here are my top 3 Clever Location Ideas for Styling Flatlays at Home! Enjoy!
1. Floor
This is the most common place in our home that I’ll style flatlays; mostly out of necessity (we live in a small apartment), but also because I love the ability to spread out. I usually tend to pick a spot next to an open window to make use of natural light!
Pro-Tip: If you need a high vantage point to now capture this masterpiece you styled on your floor, ask a buddy to stand on a chair over top of you. ;) Just make sure to use a very sturdy chair and be safe in the process!
2. Bed
I love styling cozy scenes on my bed because there’s an effortless story to be told in this location, with lots of peaceful vibes. I always make sure to mess up the covers just a bit to create some movement and variety in a photo, and to include a hard surface under any coffee or tea so I don’t spill it on my sheets by accident!
3. Kitchen or Dining Room Table
My personal desk-alternative is my kitchen table… so I find myself styling a lot of photos here! Sometimes I shoot at an angle to feature my dining chairs and highlight the scenery, and sometimes I use it for the blank, clean surface. I almost always incorporate some fruit when styling on my kitchen table (either on their own, or in a neutral dish) because I love the pop of color that it gives to my photos.
Pro-Tip: If your kitchen counter or table don’t match up with the aesthetic you’re looking for in your shoot, try building a simple faux kitchen table top with some wood and tools from the hardware store, or picking up a slab of stone from a local supplier. There are lots of DIY tutorials on Pinterest that can lead you down the path of creating a counter or table to trick the eye!
