Casas de Núñez: Kitchen Remodel with Zia Tile

In August 2020 we (Anna + Jesús) bought our first investment property and fixer-upper! In the process of completely renovating the kitchen of the main house, we had the absolute honor of working with Zia Tile! Zia provided our beautiful backsplash, and we created content and promotional materials for them in exchange.

It was such a blast getting to work with Zia Tile. Our collaboration aside - they quickly became one of our favorite tile companies around. Their customer service is spot on and the quality of their tile is unmatched. Not to mention, we think that the designs of their tiles are some of the coolest that we’ve seen (and we’ve seen a lot of tile companies through the process of fixing up our home). We can’t wait to use their products again in future properties.

When we got started, the kitchen was in awful shape. The cabinets were falling apart (whoever installed it used upper cabinets as lower cabinets which made us laugh), the fridge and dishwasher was full of rotten food, the floor under the tile was completely eaten by termites and damaged by water, and the drywall behind the cabinets were pretty covered in mold.

Needless to say, the whole space needed to be completely gutted and rebuilt. We re-drywalled, added new floors, and designed a fresh new kitchen that opened the space up and celebrated the high ceilings with long open shelves in place of upper cabinets. Aesthetically, we were heavily inspired by our friends at Yield Design Co.. Their work and style largely influenced the outcome of this space.

Below is a slide with a drawing and mood board that we made in the process of designing the kitchen.

For our kitchen backsplash, we installed Zia Tile’s 8” x 8” Pomelo Cement Tile in “Bone”.

The Pomelo Cement tile also comes in beautiful Zeppelin and Terracotta colors - but we chose Bone to match the color of our ash wood cabinets from IKEA.

We used Mapei Flexicolor CQ grout in “Alabaster” to compliment the beige design and sealed the tiles with both Filamatt matte wax sealant and 511 Porous Plus Sealer from Miracle Sealants. These suggestions are all sent in a instructional guide by Zia upon purchase of their tile.

We’re in love with the way this kitchen turned out and could not be more thankful for the way that Zia Tile played a key role in the overall design. Continue scrolling for more images of the finished space!
